Zuckerberg Request Governments to assist in Controlling the Internet Content

The recent attack at Muslim worshippers at two New Zealand mosques killing 50 innocent people including children and women, changes the thinking way of the whole world. Globally the leaders, common community and the think tankers criticize the live stream of the terror attack on the social media network Facebook. Due to the situation and international criticism, the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg invites the governments and regulators to work with him to control and manage the internet content. He said that to control the harmful content on the internet is the responsibility of the firms alone and it is good practice. Moreover, Zuckerberg feels that there may be a need for new laws in the four areas. New regulations for the areas such as election integrity, data portability, harmful content, and privacy.

The statement from the FB founder comes after the two weeks when the terrorist live-streamed the Mosque attack on his Facebook account. Mr. Zuckerberg stated that the lawmakers usually tell him that they have much control over speech and he agrees with them. Following the statement of Facebook’s chief, FB was making an independent body so individuals can appeal the decisions of FB about what posted and what taken down. Also, he calls a new set of rules they are going to apply to the technology companies. He expressed that those rules should be the same for all the websites on the internet and it will be helpful to control the harmful content from spreading rapidly across platforms.

Demands of Mark Zuckerberg for New Regulations

Below are the points whom the Chief of Facebook is demanding:

  • The first and the foremost thing he called for is common rules that all social media networks to follow. Those laws enforced by the third-party bodies for controlling the rapid spread of the harmful content.
  • After every three months, all the leading technology companies should release the transparency report and put it on the same level along financial reporting.
  • To protect the integrity of the elections all over the world, make the laws stronger with the same standards for all the websites to recognize the political actors.
  • Introducing those laws that not only applicable to candidates and elections, however, also for other disruptive political issues. Besides, the laws should apply outside of the authorized campaign periods.
  • New standards across industry-wide to manage how political campaigns use a person’s data to target online voters.
  • Further countries to adopt the laws regarding privacy that came into force last year such as (GDPR) the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
  • Laws will implement standardized globally such as ‘Common Global framework’ instead of laws differ from country to country.
  • Transparent rules that who will be accountable for the protection of user’s data when they move it from one server to another.
