On Saturday, India set a record, for the first time surpassing 0.4 million confirmed coronavirus cases.

According to India’s Health Ministry, the new virus infections count for the previous 24-hour span was a record 401993 COVID-19 cases. However, public health officials believe the actual toll might be at least five times higher.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top United States infectious disease expert, said in an interview with Indian Express newspaper that this virus had shown them that it would explode in society if left to its own devices. If people do not respect its ability to cause severe damage, they will get into trouble. Therefore, Dr. Fauci recommended a lock down for India.

Anthony Fauci said that factually, lock down so that people wind up having less spread of the virus. No one likes to lock down the state. But if India, does it just for a few weeks, they could significantly influence the dynamics of the COVID-19 outbreak.

On Saturday, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center said that overall, India has almost 19164969 COVID-19 infections and nearly 211853 deaths. And America has the most coronavirus cases in the world with over 32M. There are over 151M global virus infections.

In New Delhi, twelve patients died on May 1(Saturday) when their hospital ran out of oxygen supply for about eighty minutes.

India received first consignment of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, arrived from Russia

Also, on May 1, eighteen others died when a fire erupted in a ‘COVID-19 ward’ at a hospital in western India. Authorities say thirty patients were rescued from the ground floor fire at the Welfare Hospital in Bharuch, in Gujarat state.

Officials said that it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the fire. Indian PM Narendra Modi said on Twitter that he was pained by losing lives due to a fire at the hospital, adding condolences to the grieving families.

The Republic of India expanded its COVID-19 vaccine eligibility on 1st May to anyone 18 and older, but many locations say that they just don’t have any coronavirus vaccines.

On Saturday, India did receive some good news. Its first consignment of Sputnik V vaccine arrived from Russia, which is to send 0.125 billion vaccine shots in all. Only 2 percent of India’s 1.4B people have been vaccinated.
