Germany’s Defense Minister, Christine Lambrecht, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Annalena Baerbock, have requested considerably higher economic assistance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in action to increase their defense against Moscow’s brutal incursion.
In a letter to Christian Wolfgang Lindner, Germany’s Minister of Finance, Annalena Baerbock (The Greens) and Christine Lambrecht (Social Democrats) urged the already planned €697M for the 2023 budget to support Kyiv’s forces be almost tripled to nearly €2.2 Bn. The German news service, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, saw the letter on 22nd October.
According to the German foreign and defense ministers, a considerable increase in the annual budget on assistance is necessary for Berlin to perceptibly assume new responsibility that their global allies anticipate from them. In addition, the two said that the increased funding would help to protect Germany’s strategic interests.
Furthermore, Berlin has drawn fire from Kyiv and officials within the country itself for its backtracking on a pledge to send main battle tanks and other heavy weapons to the Ukrainian army. Germany said it wanted to harmonize any such action with its partners. A center-right conservative-liberal & liberal-conservative German newspaper, FAZ.NET, reported on Saturday that Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Prime Minister, requested Berlin for more security assistance as early as possible.
Ukrainian PM to Meet German Chancellor
Mr. Shymal, the former governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine, said the Ukrainian military is impatiently awaiting the delivery of more weapons and equipment, which are needed without delay. He added drone jammers were required to counter twenty to thirty Iran-made suicide drones Moscow was using against the East European state almost daily.
Kyiv’s determined efforts to shoot down the Iranian Shahed-136 UAVs are increasingly successful as Moscow continues to employ those drones against targets across the post-Soviet country, according to the UK Defense Ministry. Moreover, the Prime Minister of Ukraine well-regarded the newly provided German IRIS-T, a medium-range infrared homing AAM/SAM missile, expressing that Kyiv was already employing it and saved many lives.
Denys Shmyhal continued that Russia’s assets frozen abroad should be utilized for rebuilding efforts in war-torn Ukraine. He said that destruction from Russia’s brutal and continued attacks until now come to over USD 750 bn. The Ukrainian PM is planned to hold a meeting with Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, in Berlin on Monday to open a German-Ukrainian Business Forum.
